Renault Megane RS Trophy Faces VW Golf GTI TCR On The Track

Reviews

The Renault Megane RS Trophy has rather big shoes to fill but the French have repeatedly shown that they know how to build a ridiculously fast hot hatch. The question here is, can it beat the VW Golf GTI TCR on the track?

On paper, the French hot hatch is pretty close to the GTI TCR; its turbocharged 1.8-liter engine produces 296 HP (300 PS) over the 286 HP (290 PS) of the Golf, 0 to 62mph comes in 5.7 seconds over over the VW’s 5.6 while the Megane tips the scales at 1,419kg (3,128lbs) over the Golf’s 1,430kg (3,152lbs).

Evo magazine took the Renault Megane RS Trophy and the Golf GTI TCR to Anglesey circuit in the UK to find out which one of the two is the quickest around the track.

The Renault Megane RS Trophy comes with a six-speed manual while the VW Golf GTI TCR is available only with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission but the former also throws in the mix a rear-wheel steering system.

While the Golf GTI TCR does a pretty good job at showcasing its extra cornering performance over a standard GTI, it can’t hide from the angry French hot hatch. The Megane RS Trophy showcases from the get-go that it’s a more focused machine than its German rival, featuring a sharper turn-in and overall more grip.

It should be no surprise then that the Megane managed to set a lap time that fast, but then again, did you expect anything less from a hot hatch with the Trophy name attached to it?
